![]() ![]() As you hop between ad-hoc islands and miniature bases around the lake, you'll throw switches that raise the level, letting you climb higher up the canyon. One highlight is 'Hazard', which takes place in a yawning canyon containing a lake of toxic sludge. This two-part level is the point at which Prodeus reveals its hand, with subsequent maps all revolving around a particular concept or mechanic. The early levels, for example, see you following a monorail through various facilities on the game's beleaguered asteroid, until you come to the epicentre of the war between order and chaos, descending into a vast crater to the fortress at its nadir. The effect is that you passively intuit the function of these locations as you violently redecorate them. ![]() In its map design, Prodeus splits the difference between the abstracted labyrinths of Doom and the more logically coherent spaces of Half-Life, shifting seamlessly between the two in dreamlike fashion. That personality emerges once Prodeus has reacquainted you with the basics, delivering increasingly intense encounters in increasingly creative levels. Levels are busy with enemies from the off, and become incredibly intense by the end. Combined with the deeply brown appearance of Prodeus' opening levels, and it initially doesn't appear to have much of a personality beyond its hybrid visual style and lashings of gore. ![]() Most of the foes you face are thinly disguised variants of Doom's demonic adversaries, with legally distinct versions of imps, pinkies and cacodemons referencing Prodeus lineage. Its weirdest weapon is a late-game twist on Unreal Tournament's Biorifle that isn't much fun to wield, and there's some of that same conservatism in much of its enemy roster. The highlights though, are the chaingun and plasma rifle, both of which are perfect for shredding through the hordes of foes Prodeus throws at you.Īlthough well designed, there's nothing especially radical within Prodeus' weaponry. Other weapons include a rocket launcher with a delightful pump-action reload, and a lightning-rifle with a railgun alt-fire that cracks like thunder. The shotgun has clearly been iterated upon obsessively, with a bassy default fire that never fails to satisfy. Beneath the gristle Prodeus understands this too, combining smooth, speedy player movement with an arsenal of reliably punchy weapons. Levels blend abstract arenas and mazes with more architecturally coherent spaces like this.īut as Nintendo demonstrated, a shooter doesn't need to be violent to be satisfying. None of which is to mention how it sounds - I've never heard a sprite squelch quite the way I have in Prodeus. In more crowded scenes Prodeus turns into an X-Rated version of Splatoon, with your weapons coating entire rooms in internal fluids of various colours. Fire your shotgun into the chest of a zombie grunt and their torso will disintegrate like service station toilet paper, splattering surrounding terrain in near-comical amounts of blood. Glisten is the optimal word for describing Prodeus' gibbage - the violence here is striking, and stylishly over-the-top. When you fire a rocket or shoot an explosive barrel, the resulting blast will illuminate the scene in a fiery orange glow, while environmental light sources glisten off gunmetal corridors and rain-slicked terrain. Terrain and environments are rendered in angular 3D, while objects and enemies are presented as chunky sprites (although there's an option to swap them for 3D models too). Prodeus' amalgamated personality is evident in its visual style, which mimics the 2.5D graphics of early id-tech and Build engine games then infuses it with modern lighting and visual effects. ![]() Availability: Out now for PC, PS4, PS5 and Xbox Series S/X, coming 7th October to Nintendo Switch. From your perspective, both sides are equally in your way, and will die by the hundreds, if not thousands, as you carve a path across the surface of the asteroid and beyond. You're an archetypal space marine trapped on a barren but mineral rich asteroid, where a cataclysm has resulted in an all-out war between two interdimensional factions – one representing order, and the other chaos. This is an anachronistic high-wire act, synthesising old and new ideas in a way that is always exciting, occasionally inspired, and defies easy categorisation.Įven the base premise is wilfully elusive, although this is well in the spirit of the genre's foundational texts. ![]() It was difficult to make, and it’s hard to listen to. But Layne…he was something special that only happens once.ĪLICE IN CHAINS – Alice in Chains (1995 Columbia)Īlice in Chains (known colloquially as Tripod) is a difficult album. ![]() It is true that the band eventually found a way to carry on with William Duvall, and they have done so very well. “I just wanna hug you all!…but I’m not gonna,” he exclaims at the end. Listening to MTV Unplugged, you can’t help but miss Layne. It has never been recorded in the studio, which makes the unplugged show that much more special. Like many of their songs it has atonal qualities that make it a difficult pill to swallow. “Over Now”, however, is a blast.Īlice finished the set with a new song called “Killer is Me”. It is more about the atmosphere than the notes. For songs that were always challenging, “Frogs” is certainly one, and it is no less so unplugged. “Heaven Beside You” was always (largely) acoustic, but live it has a swagger. Even though the band hadn’t played live in ages, and despite Layne’s fragility, they were certainly as good as ever on MTV Unplugged.Ī cluster of new material lies on the back end. Layne absolutely wails on “Got Me Wrong” from Sap, and if you want intensity then check out “Would?”. Sean Kinney’s marching band style drums give a slight military feel. It’s a song about Jerry’s dad, a Vietnam vet. “Rooster” too is more peaceful, though an undercurrent of angst is always present. “Angry Chair” is one of Alice in Chains’ heaviest songs to hear it unplugged is strange but oddly appropriate. Layne clearly poured himself into the song. Though was well received, “Down in a Hole” from Dirt earns more shouts of familiarity. (The other four were opening for Kiss, who also had an Unplugged album in 1996.) “Sludge Factory” is a difficult song from a murky album. They played only five shows Unplugged was the first. Due to Layne’s health, Alice were unable to tour in ’95-’96. Right after a lil’ bit of “Enter Sandman”, Alice in Chains do the newbie “Sludge Factory” for the first time ever. “No Excuses” is perfect, and just listen to the percussion work of Sean Kinney!Ī number of album tracks, better known as heavy electric songs, are next. They could do multiple takes, but one of them has to be perfect. The big single from Jar of Flies, “No Excuses” rounds out this trio. Their vocal blend was Alice’s most defining feature. “Brother” from Sap is next a showcase for the harmonies of Layne Staley and Jerry Cantrell. The eerie quiet of the audience only adds to the tension. For this show, Alice added guitarist Scott Olsen to free up Jerry Cantrell’s hands to solo. It sets a dark, quiet tone that follows through the whole album. “Nutshell” from Jar of Flies is a brilliant opener. Their Unplugged focuses on mellow(ish) moments from everything but their debut, Facelift. At least in the early days, you could count on an acoustic EP between electric albums. It’s somewhat strange that Alice’s first live album was an acoustic performance, but they have always been a two sided band. Certainly Kiss’ instalment is up there, and so is Alice in Chains’. MTV’s Unplugged series is responsible for some of the best live albums you’ll find. If that happens here, we will line up Rainier Fog for a re-review.ĪLICE IN CHAINS – MTV Unplugged (1996 Sony) They exist and when they do, they often become favourites. Perhaps Rainer Fog is one of those albums that doesn’t click until the 100th listen. These foundations support a collection of well written songs. Riffs are constructed from the strongest mortar. Little guitar hooks snake in and out of verses, cool as hell. There are verses, choruses, melodies and all the accoutrements. Rainier Fog is terribly conventional by comparison with Dirt. ![]() Staley seemed to bring an unschooled approach, completely unafraid to make unconventional music. What’s the issue? Is it that we’ve heard all this before? Ever since the passing of Layne Staley, Alice In Chains lost that certain “fucked up” quality to their music. From there on, the songs are less memorable, with the exception of “Never Fade” which has a chorus that goes on for miles. It’s also not the fault of the lead track, “The One You Know” which is a terrific starter. It’s not singer William Duvall - this is his third album with Alice In Chains, and he’s done an admirable job every time out. It’s hard to put a finger on exactly why Rainier Fog lacks the same impact. It’s especially disappointing since their last platter, 2013’s The Devil Put Dinosaurs Here, was so crushingly perfect. Such is the case with the latest Alice In Chains, Rainier Fog. It’s always disappointing when you give a new album a fair shot, but it refuses to stay in your skull. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Museums were a valuable resource during the earlier days of the pandemic, providing a much-needed escape through virtual programming and activities for kids and adults alike. Sounds like it is, in which case the advice I've given doesn't apply. You're going to have a hard time getting a decent piezo tone through the setup you describe, honestly. I use a comp for leads, so I set my "pick volume" on the guitar, kick on the comp, and set my gain that way, and make sure I have the headroom come solo time.ĭoesn't sound exactly like a mic-ed up acoustic, but I like it better than most systems, and nothing sounds exactly like an acoustic in a room, or mic-ed up.īelieve it or not, the instructions that come with the Fishman onboard blenders are fairly useful. With a group, I cut bass, solo, I add it. I keep the volume at about 3 O'Clock for stuff where I use a pick, and full up when fingerpicking. After that's set, I fade the pickup in for some density. I start with the slider on mic only, and work the notch and contour (generally cut some highs, and use the notch to kill the band that's feeding back most) to get it to sound as good as I can, as loud as I can, flip the phase switch a couple times to see which way I like it best, then use some channel EQ (usually cut a bunch of 300-500hz) to keep it loud and useful and not too woofy. Most of my guitars have fishman onboard blenders (which have the mic and the pickup, a sweepable EQ band and a notch filter affects the mic signal, and the treble/bass affect the pickup signal. If you're playing in a group, you'll probably want less bass, and a little more mids. If you're playing solo, and you have electronics onboard(the onboard stuff was made to work with the pickup, get as much signal from it as you can), crank the volume, bass, and treble, and cut the mids (depending on the system, a little or a lot). Your live acoustic tone is almost always going to be some sort of compromise. In general, piezo systems will never sound as good as an excellent acoustic in the studio mic'd with a nice external condenser and mic pre. Too much sizzle or bass and the guitar just doesn't sound quite natural either. Too much middle and the guitar crowds the vocals and other stuff at those frequencies. Overall, if I can shape the tone of the guitar to taste, I like piano like tones across the frequency spectrum. If I was playing bigger gigs, I'd likely want to DI right into the board instead of putting a mic on the SWR.) (I have an SWR Cali Blonde which is great for most places I'd play. Once I've got that, then I'll shape the tone as much as I can with the guitar and amp and/or the board depending on how I'm amplifying the guitar. My first goal is to get to the right volume level to sit at the right spot in the mix and not feed back. It has a piezo and an internal mic, each with their own tone shaping controls. I'm using a Taylor with a Fishman Stereo Blender. I use the EQ and notch filtering to control feedback, and the frequencies where you have feedback problems will vary depending on the size and shape of the room. ![]() I don't have a "go to" setting per se, but that's because my settings will vary depending on the room I'm in. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Headline concert by the River Raisin Ragtime Revue featuring ragtime and early jazz. ![]() Adrian’s own Los Hermanos Villegas band at 7 p.m.Demonstrations from the Sam Beauford Woodworking Institute.Demonstrations and activities from the Adrian Center for the Arts.Beer truck from the Tecumseh Brewing Co.Food truck from El Chapulin/The Grasshopper. This is the first time the annual event is being held on the PlaneWave campus and it highlights R4’s partnership with PlaneWave Instruments to renovate the historic campus chapel into Haviland Hall, a community performance venue and home to the R4 orchestra.
